WHAT IS OREGON BEE FRIENDLY WINE
A number of Oregon vineyards are working together to enhance the habitat for bees (which includes over 700 species in Oregon). These viticulturists are committed to making wine that promotes biodiversity. It all started in 2022 when six Willamette Valley vineyards joined together on an Oregon Bee Friendly Wine pilot. The program is rapidly expanding, with around thirty vineyards now participating. It also includes collaborators at Pollinator Partnership and LIVE who are developing standards for bee friendly wine grape certification. Oregon wine grape growers are also facilitated by two world class databases of wild bees and wild plants, the Oregon Bee Atlas and Oregon Flora, that uniquely position Oregon vineyards to make effective restoration work for their bees. Combined, this group of viticulturists, non-profits, researchers, and extension professionals are looking to make Oregon wine the most bee-friendly in the world. The pilot is supported by USDA Western Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education Farmer/Rancher grant and a Specialty Crop Block Grant.
